As one day follows another and enters the stream of indivisible past, I find myself pondering more the nature of dreams and of reality. This musing has been influenced particularly by the filmmaker David Lynch, as well as prior work in my classes on composite imagery and a growing interest in ontology, the study of philosophy concerned with the essence of being.
As one more yesterday passes into the ether, I find a greater interest in my dreams and the dreams expressed in the art of others. In fact, my literal yesterday included watching the Japanese animated film Spirited Away for the first time as well as my reading of selected poems of Edgar Allen Poe’s, including “A Dream Within a Dream.” Both have given me a sense of wonder for what can be expressed in art and a yearning for more.
As today becomes another yesterday and tomorrow is welcomed as a new today, I am eager to continue exploring the nature of what is, even if only for my private enjoyment. And while many will dismiss dreams as strange or terrible things, I wish to keep their company and listen to their chatter while pondering what they say reveals about reality, consciousness, authenticity, and the unconscious mind.
