A short text goes a long way: revisiting my micro-poems

At home here’s a little A5 Clairefontaine notebook in pink that’s shelved among a lot of other archived notebooks. It’s worn and just over half full, and across its silky lined pages are all of my earliest poems written in a rainbow of fountain pen inks. Those early poems were full of getting out all sorts of feelings I had, especially about a person I really liked when I was in college. Yet while I have read some of those poems and felt them quite fledgling, some are still beautiful to me today.

Among all of that trying new writing in poetic forms was a collection of tiny poems I will call “micro-poems”. Even today, I found a some of these quite fun, but what I love about them most is how I tried to get at the essence of an idea with maybe eight words. Not all of them are as strong as the rest in my mind, but I think they deserve a second look.

So for the first time, I am publishing many of these micro-poems. There are a few I want to talk about specifically, but I will publish each poem by itself in separate blog posts without discussion, and for select poems I will discuss my thoughts on them or memories I have of writing them. Largely this is so the poems can be read by themselves and enjoyed in themselves. Analysis or discussion can happen come after.

Okay, that’s the background. Now let’s begin.
